about

20' to 2000 was released on the German label Raster Noton in 1999. 12 CDs, each featuring 20 minutes of music, showcased work from a different artist every month. The package itself was remarkable, with each CD stored inside a clear scalloped CD Shell, with an extra strong magnet holding the set together. In fact, I remember Carsten Nicolai telling me at the time that the magnets were SO powerful that this proved to be an issue in the post. Separate packages sent in the mail would refuse to part from one another, as the magnetic attraction was so very strong. I can only imagine the post office trying to pull them apart.

The series featured the work of Wolfgang Voigt, Mika Vainio, Ryoji Ikeda, Thomas Brinkmann, Coil/Elph, Noto and many more. Each artist could choose their month for release, so I chose August as my date, and titled my work Cystic. My brother had Cystic Fibrosis and his birthday was in August and thought this would be a special tribute to him, even though I don’t think he ever knew about it at all. On 14th December 1999 we all performed live at this prestigious Volksbühne Theatre in Berlin, each of us presenting our work.

VARIOUS ARTISTS
20' TO 2000
widely known for the close interaction between experimental forms of music, art and science, raster-noton produced a new series of 12 cds, each of them 20 minutes in length. the artists' concept behind this is the creation of a piece of music for the last 20 minutes of the year 1999 as a cutting edge of the past century.

»20' to 2000« is a monthly magazine-like cd released over the last year of the millenium. in the 12 issues, 12 artists were invited to transform their ideas - possibly a manifest of the millenium - designed for the series using new technologies and characteristic translucent materials.

the series was awarded the "golden nica" from ars electronica in 2000.
