about

Inspired by the controversial American book of the same title by Nicholson Baker, Double Fold is one extended elastic track focusing on a pulse,128 beats per minute. The book is an exploration of the dismantling of the greatest archives of our recorded heritage, paper as a resource now too fragile to store our history on.

Sourcing sounds from my own domestic tape archive and processing them digitally I also explored my own sound diary, producing a series of contrasting moods that slip and slide around one another, yet never losing grip of the measure. This is an album to equally one to listen to at home as well as the dancefloor. Double Fold scatters beats into a warm seductive groove, hard digital lock grooves melding into rhythms that edge under the floorboards whilst pixellated abstraction tattoos its way across the surface.

"Since beginning of the 90s Scanner has been extending our perception with his mapping out the ubiquitous acoustic environments of here and now. Creating compositions out of various frequencies, disintegrated whispers and vocals, (de)personalised telephone conversations and hums of cities, he is transforming the immaterial soundscape that surrounds us daily and which we tend to suppress into a meaningless cloud of buzz. This actual or virtual inaudibility of the used and manipulated sounds is the challenge on which Scanner assembles his musical libraries of ‘radioactive fossils’ (G. Deleuze) that when being listened to, similar to Proustian re-activation of a buried memory through a physical object being in interaction with our senses, radiate the possibility to let go of the implications, past, reminiscences they have condensed in themselves.

Electronic musicians possess the knowledge of rendering out of the most alienated computer- or reality generated sounds an emotional, organic, warm, forgotten, fragile audible experience. Scanner’s Double Fold, taking its source of inspiration from the controversial book of the same title by Nicholson Baker, is such an invitation to a perceptual journey of contrasting moods, dissolving in an almost contrapunctual relationship between themselves around the firm beat that extends throughout all of the tracks."
