about

Back in 2012 I presented a new sound installation in London at Lancaster House, managed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In anticipation of the London Olympics the Prime Minister and Government had ambitious plans to use London 2012 as a platform from which to generate a legacy of business, trade and investment for Britain. The British Business Embassy British served as a members style club where pre-registered business and government delegates attended conferences, hosted one-to-one meetings, and attended social receptions and networking functions. It was anticipated to be the number one destination point to conduct business during Games time.

They were keen to exemplify the ‘Best of British’ – industry, heritage, culture, innovation, service and hospitality – presenting the UK as a leading edge nation.

So I was invited a present a new work. I created this sound installation that explored an idea of the ensemble voice in a choral work, connecting tradition, celebration and digital arts in a deceptively playful manner. I created an arrangement of the British National Anthem with soprano, alto, tenor and bass ‘singers,' expanding it from a recognisable melody into a languid, measured and graceful work.

In so doing, a familiar tune became something spiritual, emotive and plaintive. Ironically the work was situated in the public toilets in the building, as I wanted to ensure that everyone got to experience the installation at some point in time. The irony of Brexit following up a few years later sadly erased any positivity born from this experience.

This work has never been heard outside of this original installation and is exclusively for fans only.
