about

Lauwarm Instrumentals has proven over the years to be one of my most popular album releases, with Passage de Recherche used in countless TV shows and broadcasts. I've had numerous requests to re-release this in some fashion, and now Bandcamp has offered the chance to also share demos of tunes that feature on the album, as well as tracks never heard but recorded at the same sessions. So, here's finally a bumper deluxe edition.

And as to the title - I had had a review in the press of a previous recording and the journalist wrote something along the lines of 'Scanner is so hyped up and a terrible musician and this record is just a collection of lukewarm instrumentals.' I thought 'Lukewarm Instrumentals' would be a brilliantly witty title for an album release, but in speaking with friends they suggested it was just too negative a title. So, instead I simply chose a German equivalent, renaming it 'Lauwarm Instrumentals'. Further comedy followed when this album was then released and I was constantly asked about the title and had to explain this story, over and over again!

And here the original notes for the release at the time after mastering:

the composers voice, unwaveringly fullsome drums, rolling piano lines, as if kraftwerk mistakenly confused a guitar with a keyboard.

gentlegentle string loops, processed voices, ether sounds

slug beats dissolve into fluttering polyrhythmic orchestral flow recordings of inaccessible places in london, Reuters, Tower 42 and the control rooms of the London Underground

loops elegantly cycle around voices

a beat driven amalgram of drum and bass rhythms, a string quartet with, filmic in texture, unrelenting in its object

closure, melancholia, nfused a guitar with a keyboardisolatedrooms of the London Underground, tolling bell, the sound of fish flying on water
