about

Rabbit at the Airport is a “gesamtkunstwerk” integrating music, visual art and the moving image in a project combining limited edition vinyl records, short film, photography and the internet. The work, musically occupying a middle ground between electroacoustic composition and electronica, was created by Martin Stig Andersen (DK) in collaboration with clarinettist Gareth Davis (NL/UK), electronica musician Robin Rimbaud (aka Scanner) (UK) and the visual artist and film maker Jacob Ballinger (A).

Rabbit at the Airport comprises four parts of which the first three, Rabbit at the Airport I-III, were released on two 12" singles and a LP respectively on the UK label Usagi Records. As an integrated part of the concept the vinyls gatefold covers narrate the tale, in comic strip form, of Dedalus, master inventor and architect, who has become lost in a labyrinth of his own creation. This wordless story unfolds in the dark imagery of Ballinger concluding with the short film Rabbit at the Airport - the finish line.

The music was produced with a 1930s gramophone, an audio transducer designed by the US Navy for the production of underwater sound, and a computer, brought into service in this case almost as a sonic surgical tool. These sounds are stripped bare, compressed and modified out of any obvious recognition. Hushed notes, gasped breaths and the clicks of the instrument’s keys are stretched into ambient soundscapes, muffled beats and cathartic bluster, creating a single sprawling noir track that moves between scuffed silence and angst-ridden bombast of almost cinematic proportions. Melancholic, ghostly, yet at moments threatening to burst at the seams.

What you hear here are my works from these EPs, plus an unreleased 9-minute exclusive track, Tharn, Thlay, Threar. If you purchase the vinyl of course you can also hear the additional works from the other artists.
