about

Original Programme Notes for Dutch Premiere:

"This opportunity to compose a new work for David Dawson was always destined to be a personal challenge, from the very first moment that David and I sat down in a little Amstel café in Amsterdam to discuss our intentions with the production. Immediately we agreed that we wished to push ourselves in a fresh direction creatively and to create the finest collaboration we could imagine, to better ourselves!
It’s probably the most narrative driven of all my compositions taking its most direct inspiration from Stravinsky’s forceful Greek works, offering up a world that slips between classical layers and more electronically composed and processed sounds.

A brief scan over my notes offers an idea of the motivations– echo, trance, storm, move, mathematics, zodiac, bolero. Persephone, masks, elegant, forgetful, sad, melting, sunlight, tranquility, reverse, Muses, hope, patterns, spells, Narcissus, heartbreaking, love, nothing is true. An assemblage of possible worlds was clearly already present in our communications.

I hope that that the score reflects the elegance, passion and integrity of the choreography and scenography. Uppermost in my ambition was to write a fluid, emotive score that would touch both the heart and the mind in equal measure that soars across the auditorium, carrying the audience into this extraordinary vision"
